OUR COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIROMENT

At Fandango we wholeheartedly embrace our commitment to the environment. We understand the importance of our responsibility as a small business and have taken steps to ensure sustainability through seven eco-friendly practices.

Environmentally sustainable products and practices

  • Our hand fans are crafted using recycled wood, while our boxes are made from recyclable cardboard. We actively prevent the use of plastic in our products to minimise the environmental impact.

  • In our production process, we have proactively eliminated the use of plastic bags that often come with folding fans. This helps us avoid unnecessary plastic waste and contribute to a cleaner future.

  • We use eco-friendly Jiffy Green® padded bags to package our hand held fans. These bags have 100% recycled paper lining, meaning they are fully recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable. Just pop them in your paper recycling bin!

  • We rely entirely on 100% renewable energy sources to power our business premises, and our warehouse works exclusively on solar panel energy.
  • Our business cards and flyers are recyclable and most are made from 100% recycled paper.
  • We recycle all our packaging materials.

How we offset our carbon footprint

Offsetting our carbon footprint is big part of our environmental strategy. A small business like ours, generates approximately 20 tonnes of carbon emissions every year. To ease this impact, we actively support three environmental initiatives that address different parts of sustainability which all work together to offset our carbon emissions.

By having these practices and taking proactive steps to offset our carbon footprint, we strive to contribute positively to our planet’s well-being. At Fandango, we believe that collective efforts, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in building a greener and more sustainable future.

Planting trees

We have partnered with Make It Wild makeitwild.co.uk (registration number 11051292) who have planted trees at Dacre Lane, North Yorkshire to offset 10 tonnes of our carbon emissions. Check out the photo showing our plot.

We have also sponsored the planting of 5 Mangrove Propagules in Kenya. Check out the map showing the location of the mangroves.

Peat restoration

We have donated to RSPB and United Utilities who are undergoing peat restoration in our local area at Doves Stone reservoir near Oldham.

Peatlands are fantastic. They provide a home for rare and unique wildlife as well as acting like a giant sponge for carbon.

Peat soils are formed in waterlogged conditions over thousands of years to create carbon rich soils comprised of partially decomposed organic matter. Amazingly, peatlands can contain up to 10 times the amount of carbon stored in an equivalent area of rainforest! The UK is home to nearly three million hectares of peatland, our greatest land-based carbon store. However, due to atmospheric pollution and artificial drainage for agriculture and the extraction of horticultural peat, up to 80% of British peatlands are in a state of severe decline. When peat is left bare and dry it emits its precious stored carbon into the atmosphere.

Healthy peat bogs lock away more carbon and improve drinking water by reducing the amount of peat being washed into reservoirs. The RSPB and United Utilities have been working with landowners and volunteers to restore these peatlands through revegetation of bare peat by planting sphagnum mosses. Along with blocking drainage channels to raise the water table and return waterlogged conditions, where carbon can once again be stored.

Ocean Conservation Trust

We have donated to the Ocean Conservation Trust to support them in the amazing work they are doing to restore our natural sea grass environment in the UK.

Unlike rainforests, seagrass meadows are largely overlooked despite their global footprint and massive contribution to the environment. They provide one of the most environmentally valuable habitats on the planet.

Found on every continent except Antarctica, they are the Ocean’s only flowering plant. Seagrasses provide us with oxygen, are nurseries for our fisheries and protect our coasts against erosion. And, perhaps most importantly of all, they absorb carbon up to 35 times more efficiently than a rainforest.

Since the 1930s, 90% of seagrass beds have been lost. It’s been estimated that seagrasses are declining by 7% a year globally and if this is correct, it makes it the fastest disappearing habitat on the planet. The main issues causing the decline is human activity, particularly destructive fishing practices, coastal development, poorly managed marine activities and pollution.

With the correct approach, the decline of underwater seagrass meadows can be reversed. Wide scale reforestation would provide a unique solution that would help protect global food security and preserve habitats for iconic and endangered species. Perhaps most importantly, large amounts of additional Blue Carbon would be absorbed in the process, mitigating climate change.

Net Zero - Bronze subscription

Our ongoing Net Zero journey

We are an accredited member of the Wenta Zero Bronze which is designed to help small businesses understand climate issues, introducing us to different viewpoints and other businesses who are starting their own Net Zero journey.

The Bronze subscription includes short webinars including information about climate change and the environment, downloadable materials and access to Wenta business advisors. We have completed all the training material to be Zero Bronze certified. We receive updates on national Net Zero guidance and a copy of their newsletter that will include content about Climate Change, Net Zero and the new Green Economy.

Our future plan is to work towards their Zero Silver accreditation.
